The temple located in Kannathur off the EC Road by the seaside is built in Kalingan style reminiscent of the Jagannath Temple, Puri. The temple has shrines dedicated to Shiva, Ganesh, Bimala. The annual Rathyatra is the main festival celebrated.
The temple was consecrated on 26 January 2001. The shrine is a replica of the Jagannath temple at Puri and is built in Oriya style. The idols of deities at the shrine are made of neem wood, similar to those at the Puri shrine. The shrine is built of black granite originating from Kancheepuram and white marble from Rajasthan. The main temple was situated on top of a staircase. A huge Dhwaja stamba stood majestically near the staircase, with a large tortoise at the base, the Dasavatharam carved around the pillar along with other Gods and Goddesses.
The temple is situated on the sea shore of Kanaathur Reddykuppam, about 1 km from the Toll booth on East Coast Road, ahead of MayaajalIt was a cool day in the month of January.
A very beautiful replica of the Temple at Puri, built and maintained by the Sri Jagannath Spiritual Educational Trust, and constructed by artisans from Orissa. Named the Dakshinakshetra, it stands there near the sea shore, an epitome of spirituality and excellence in architecture. The priests are Oriyan and the Poojas are conducted according to their traditions..
The landscaping around the temple complex covers an area of one acre. The flowers grown in the garden alone are used for the pooja, which is conducted in Oriya style. The priests at the shrine too are from Orissa.
